The FORUM has just received credible information that Chairman Bryant last Saturday joined the “Poro Society” in Bong County.
According to the report, the Head of State was initiated in the town of Kollie-ta Wyola, a few miles outside the city of Gbarnga on the main highway leading to Ganta, Nimba County.
The Chairman is said to have paid US$15,000 as membership fees thus qualifying him to be a full member. Political analysts believe that the late hour initiation of the transitional leader is aimed at buying the protection of the traditional zoes in case of any eventuality that may involve answering question in future regarding corruption and other crimes being committed during his regime.
The traditional ceremony is reported to have taken place last Saturday evening amidst top zoes, chiefs and elders of Bong and Lofa Counties following the Chairman’s brief visit to Cuttington University College at the invitation of the institution’s choir.
Liberia’s 18th President the late William V.S. Tubman took keen
interest in a traditional society of Southeastern Liberia called the “Bordeo”
which many believed sustained his presidency for 27 years.
Others who saw the 27-year rule of Tubman as a success of traditional societies,
including the Rev. Dr. William R. Tolbert, Jr. decided to follow suit. The
late Samuel Kanyon Doe and exiled President Charles Taylor also saw the
traditional method as politically prudent and so joined the society. Taylor
was called ‘Dakpannah’ while Doe was named ‘Tarnue.’
Transitional Chairman Charles Gyude Bryant seems to now be on board of such traditional bandwagon, despite being a devoted Episcopalian.
He is the latest political leader to be initiated in the “Poro Society” following his party’s (LAP) Standard-bearer, Cllr. Varney Sherman and that of Liberty Party’s, Cllr. Charles Brumskine early this year in Kokoyah and Gbarnga.
