What could be described as a very pathetic situation unfolded Wednesday, when two personnel of the Anti-Terrorists Unit (ATU), a personnel of the Special Security Service (SSS) and a civilian allegedly flogged a 25 years old petit trader to death.

The incident started around the vicinity of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia, and later ended up behind the Monrovia City Hall, where the victim identified as Fayiah Gibson was found before he was rushed to the hospital.

According to eye witnesses who spoke to this reporter on the crime scene, it all started when Fayiah, a cold water seller, was eating that fateful morning to get ready to go and sell.

The eyewitnesses said while he was eating, an ATU officer identified as Victor Natt who is a neighbor, came along and forcibly seized the spoon Fayiah (victim) was eating with.

The action of the ATU officer, apparently a joke as they had been sharing, did not go down well with Fayiah, who subsequently said, "I don’t want to joke ", according to the eyewitnesses.

The eyewitnesses said the insistence of ATU officer Natt to continue the gimmick to the dislike of Fayiah, resulted into a war of words between the two young men.

According to the eyewitnesses, as tempers blew up, Officer Natt decided to go and get "dressed up", threatening to come back and ‘deal’ with Fayiah.

The eyewitnesses said when Natt returned, some individuals who were around attempted to stop him from getting at the victim but he did not listen.

One of the eyewitnesses who claimed that the Officer was under the influence of drug, said he forced his way in the house to get at the victim by climbing through the window.

Accordingly, when he jumped through the window, he got cut and started to bleed, a situation that aggravated him the more to get at the victim.

"When ATU officer Natt entered the house, he immediately grabbed the victim by his shirt and began to beat him up", an eyewitness’ account disclosed.

It was at this time, according to the eyewitnesses, that another ATU officer only identified as AB who also lived in the same vicinity, an SSS officer identified as Patrick, and a civilian called T. Mitchell, reportedly intervened allegedly on grounds that they wanted to rescue the victim.

The eyewitnesses said the three officers in the persons of AB, Victor Natt, and Patrick along with T-Mitchell took away the victim from the house on grounds that they were taking him to the City Police at the Monrovia City Hall.

Eyewitnesses said it was at this time that the three officers and civilian T. Mitchell reportedly continued to flog the accused and left him unconscious behind the Monrovia City Hall, from where the victim was later rushed to the JFK Hospital by some other residents of the area.

He was pronounced dead shortly upon arrival at the hospital and the body transferred and deposited at the BTC mortuary.

Meanwhile, security authorities in Monrovia have confirmed the arrest and confinement of officers Victor Natt, AB and Patrick in connection to the death of the victim, while T. Mitchell, the civilian accomplice, is said to be on the run.
